Passage Preparation™ now offers a course to help you prepare for the TExES™ Bilingual Education Supplemental (164) test. This test consists of 80 multiple-choice items. You are given 5 hours to complete this test.

Bilingual Education Supplemental (164) Test Structure

The questions on this test are based on standards for bilingual education approved by the Texas board for teacher certification, the Texas Education Agency . They cover one domain, which is a broad content area. Additionally, this domain includes four competencies, which further defines the content covered by the domain.

Competency 00I

The beginning Bilingual Education teacher understands the foundations of Bilingual Education and the concepts of bilingualism and biculturalism and applies this knowledge to create an effective learning environment for students in the Bilingual Education program.

Competency 002

The beginning Bilingual Education teacher understands processes of first- and second-language acquisition and development and applies this knowledge to promote students’ language proficiency in their first language (L1) and second language (L2).

Competency 003

The beginning Bilingual Education teacher has comprehensive knowledge of the development and assessment of literacy in L1 and the development and assessment of biliteracy.

Competency 004

The beginning Bilingual Education teacher has comprehensive knowledge of content area instruction in L1 and L2 and uses this knowledge to promote bilingual students’ academic achievement across the curriculum.

Who Needs to Take the Bilingual Education Supplemental?

Texas teacher candidates who wish to serve bilingual students are required to take the Bilingual Education Supplemental (164) test. The Texas Education Agency identifies the certification areas which require this assessment. These certification areas include:

  • Spanish Bilingual Education
  • American Sign Language Bilingual Education
  • Arabic Bilingual Education
  • Chinese Bilingual Education
  • Japanese Bilingual Education
  • Vietnamese Bilingual Education

How to Prepare for the Bilingual Education Supplemental

There are some strategies you can use to help you prepare for the Bilingual Education Supplemental test.
