Passage Preparation™ was built to ensure that every teacher candidate has access to the preparation resources they need to succeed on their licensure exams. Our foundational asynchronous courses provide the content-aligned, self-paced foundation that most candidates need to build mastery and confidence. For candidates who need more structure and more interaction, our Prep+ live webinar series adds a targeted layer of expert-facilitated support. And for candidates who need the most intensive, immersive preparation available, Passage Preparation offers Synchronous Courses — our highest-level, instructor-led preparation experience.
How Synchronous Courses Work
Passage Preparation’s Synchronous Courses are live, instructor-led cohort experiences delivered over six weeks and aligned to specific licensure assessments. Each course is dedicated to a single exam, allowing participants to work through the full scope of content and competencies that assessment requires in a structured, sequenced, and highly interactive environment.
Each course is led by a subject-matter expert — a teacher or teacher educator with deep familiarity with content covered on the target assessment — supported by Passage Preparation staff throughout the engagement. Sessions combine expert instruction with guided practice, interactive discussion, and personalized feedback, giving candidates multiple opportunities to engage actively with content and apply their learning in real time. Courses are delivered to cohorts of up to 30 participants, a size that preserves the interactive, community-driven character of the learning experience while allowing for meaningful individual attention.
The six-week format is intentional. Unlike a single webinar session or a self-paced course a candidate can move through at their own pace, Synchronous Courses ask participants to commit to a sustained preparation experience. That commitment pays dividends. Over six weeks, candidates revisit challenging content multiple times, receive targeted feedback on their performance, and develop the kind of deep, durable mastery that a high-stakes licensure exam demands.
What Candidates Experience
The learning experience in a Synchronous Course is structured to build readiness progressively. Each session introduces new content, revisits prior material, and incorporates practice activities designed to mirror the format and cognitive demands of the target assessment. Between sessions, candidates continue their preparation in the Passage Preparation asynchronous platform, reinforcing what they covered in the live setting and completing practice assessments that measure their progress.
This combination of live instruction and independent practice creates a preparation rhythm that works. Candidates arrive at each session with a baseline of content engagement, allowing the instructor to focus live time on deepening understanding, working through challenging material, and addressing the specific questions and gaps that emerge as candidates prepare in earnest. The result is a preparation experience that is both comprehensive and responsive — comprehensive because it covers the full scope of what the assessment requires, and responsive because it adapts to what candidates actually need as they work toward readiness.
The cohort model adds another dimension. Candidates preparing alongside peers in the same certification area benefit from shared discussion, collective problem-solving, and the accountability that comes from learning in community. These are not passive participants sitting through a lecture. They are engaged learners asking questions, analyzing practice items, and building confidence together in a supportive and structured environment.
A Premium Option for the Candidates Who Need It Most
Not every candidate requires this level of support, and Passage Preparation does not position Synchronous Courses as a one-size-fits-all solution. They are the right choice for candidates facing significant content knowledge gaps, preparing for assessments in subject areas where performance has historically been challenging, working within compressed timelines that demand intensive preparation, or simply learning best in a structured, instructor-led environment with meaningful peer interaction.
For school districts and educator preparation programs, identifying those candidates and connecting them with the right level of support is one of the most consequential decisions in the licensure preparation process. A candidate who might have failed or abandoned the process with less support can succeed with more. Synchronous Courses represent the highest level of that support Passage Preparation offers.
Flexibility Across Subject Areas
Passage Preparation’s Synchronous Courses span a growing range of licensure assessments. Current offerings include courses aligned to Foundations of Reading, Texas Science of Teaching Reading, Elementary Education, and Special Education — areas where demand is high and where the depth of the synchronous format adds particular value. And because our catalog continues to expand, organizations supporting candidates across multiple certification areas can work with Passage Preparation to build a Synchronous Course program that addresses their specific assessment landscape.
No two districts or programs face exactly the same preparation challenge. Some are supporting cohorts of alternatively certified candidates preparing for their first licensure exam. Others are working with candidates who have attempted an assessment without success and need a more intensive path forward. Others still are launching grow-your-own pipelines and want to build structured, high-quality preparation into the candidate experience from the beginning. Whatever the context, Passage Preparation works with each partner to ensure the Synchronous Course experience is aligned to their candidates, their assessments, and their goals.
A True Partnership
What makes Passage Preparation’s Synchronous Courses more than just a product is the partnership model behind them. From the initial conversation about which courses would best serve a partner’s candidate population, to the ongoing support provided throughout the six-week engagement, to the post-course review of candidate performance and outcomes, Passage Preparation is present and invested at every stage.
For school districts in particular, this means having a preparation partner that understands the stakes — the real cost of a candidate who fails their licensure exam, delays entering the classroom, or leaves the profession before they begin. Synchronous Courses are designed to reduce those outcomes by giving candidates the most intensive, expert-led preparation support available through Passage Preparation’s platform.
Pricing for Synchronous Courses is designed to reflect the value of the engagement while remaining accessible for the organizations that need them most. We encourage districts and programs interested in learning more to reach out directly so we can build an approach that fits your candidate population and organizational goals.
The Right Support at the Right Level
Passage Preparation’s three-tier preparation model — Foundational Asynchronous Courses, Prep+, and Synchronous Courses — is designed to meet candidates where they are and provide the level of support they actually need. For candidates who need the most, Synchronous Courses deliver the depth, structure, expert instruction, and community that make the difference between a candidate who struggles and one who succeeds.
If your district or program is looking for the highest level of licensure preparation support available, we would welcome the conversation. Reach out directly at nathan.estel@passagepreparation.com to learn more about how Synchronous Courses can support your candidates.
